Abstract: English is widely recognized as the dominant language of scientific publications. The shift from national languages to English presents new opportunities and challenges for researchers, scientific institutions, and publishers. The results of a comparative analysis of the language shift are reported in two economic journals published in Poland and Germany. Specifically, a long period from 2000 to 2023 is considered. Using structural topic modeling, changes in the structures and dynamics of topics discussed in the journals are compared conditionally on the language composition of publications. Both topical structure/composition are looked at over time, as well as terminology usage within the topics. Using topic matching, topics common to both corpora are identified. Topics that were specific to one of the countries considered are also investigated, and possible reasons for the appearance or disappearance of these topics are discussed, i.e., changes in the relative importance over time.
