Abstract: The purpose is to examine the estimation of the Emax dose response model, a commonly employed framework across various fields including clinical trials, pharmacology, agriculture, and environmental studies. Although difficulties in computing maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) for the model parameters of the Emax model are frequently attributed to numerical or computational limitations, they more accurately arise from the non-existence of an MLE in certain cases. The contribution offers new insights and practical guidance for handling the full range of experimental scenarios that practitioners may encounter, supporting them throughout the estimation process.
