Title: Metabolites and cognition in the Boston Puerto Rican health study

Abstract: Several studies (cross-sectional and longitudinal) are presented that examine the plasma metabolites associated with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease in the Boston Puerto Rican Health Study (BPRHS). Metabolites were measured with untargeted metabolomic profiling (Metabolon) at baseline. Several models are used in combination with dimension reduction and multiple testing techniques to identify metabolites associated with cognitive trajectory. The metabolites identified are generally consistent with prior literature and highlight the role of medium-chain fatty acid and tyrosine metabolism in cognitive decline. The studies underline the challenges of not only dealing with large datasets but also working with collaborators in different areas.
