Title: Global climate anomalies and economic welfare: Evidence from panel of US counties
Authors: Lotanna Emediegwu - Manchester Metropolitan University (United Kingdom) [presenting]
Abstract: An extensive dataset is meticulously compiled, encompassing a range of economic indicators for all counties within the continental United States. Employing an established econometric approach, the causal impact of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon on the U.S. economy is investigated. The findings reveal a notable and statistically significant negative correlation between ENSO and economic growth rate, both in aggregate and across specific regions of the U.S. Furthermore, distinct effects of the two ENSO regimes are identified: El Nino and La Nina. Findings strengthen debates on the consequences of future warming in advanced economies.
