Title: Predicting encounter distance for new species discovery Authors:  Tsung-Jen Shen - National Chung Hsing University (Taiwan) [presenting]
Abstract: The purpose is to investigate the minimum distance needed to encounter the first individual of new species using restricted biodiversity data from a line transect. Understanding this parameter holds practical value in ecological research, particularly in assessing sampling intensity for species discovery. A straightforward estimator is developed to predict this minimal encounter distance and subsequently validate its efficacy through numerical simulations and empirical tests. The results demonstrate the estimator's robust predictive power, providing a reliable tool for researchers seeking to optimize sampling strategies for new species identification.
