Abstract: The saturated pairwise interaction Gibbs point process is introduced to model observed patterns in the spatial configuration of individuals of multiple species in nature. Its main strength lies in its ability to model attraction and repulsion within and between species over different scales. As such, it is particularly well-suited to studying associations in complex ecosystems. Based on the existing literature, an easy-to-implement fitting procedure and a technique to make inferences for the model parameters are provided. Different numerical experiments show the robustness of the model. Various ecological datasets are studied, demonstrating in each one that the model helps disentangle competing ecological effects on species distribution.
