Title: Detecting dementia: Money management difficulty and flagging early stage dementia in financial data Authors:  Cal Muckley - University College Dublin (Ireland) [presenting]
Abstract: Belated transfer of financial control can exacerbate the financial and human impact of severe cognitive decline. We show that a medically informed set of lead indicators of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias, extended to include the incipient money management difficulties of an older person, can inform a high-performance model to predict a clinical diagnosis. Invariant to extensive robustness tests, difficulties in the management of money is ranked the most important lead indicator of dementia. A financial institution with sight of the financial transactions of older persons is uniquely positioned to identify which of its customers might be in these vulnerable circumstances, and to enable the transfer of financial control.
