Title: A new characterisation-based test for symmetry

Abstract: A new test for symmetry is proposed based on a lesser-known characterisation of symmetric distributions. We derive the limiting null distribution of the test and show that the test is consistent against general alternatives. The performance of the new test is evaluated and compared to that of existing tests by means of a Monte Carlo study. It is found that the newly proposed test performs favourably compared to the other tests.
